K5 Program at Washington Primary

Every child develops at their own pace, especially during the early years. While the State of Indiana provides age guidelines for kindergarten eligibility, not every child is ready to take that big step at the same time. That’s where Washington Primary’s K5 Program comes in — offering a nurturing and developmentally appropriate option to help children succeed from the start.

What Is the K5 Program?

The K5 Program is designed for “young 5’s” - children who turn five between February 1st and September 1st. However, it is also available to any student eligible for kindergarten who may benefit from a gentler introduction to school.

This program is not a replacement for kindergarten but rather a preparatory year that helps bridge the gap for children who could use extra time to grow socially, emotionally, and academically before entering a full kindergarten classroom.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria

To be considered for the K5 Program, families must meet the following criteria:

  • Age Requirement: Children must turn 5 years old by August 1, 2025, per Indiana state law for kindergarten eligibility.
  • Commitment: K5 is a one-year program, and children will typically transition to kindergarten the following school year.
  • Selection Process: Placement is not automatic and is based on multiple factors:
    • Child’s birthdate
    • Recommendations from the Washington Primary Pre-K Director
    • Observations and input from preschool and kindergarten teachers
    • Principal’s review and final approval

Enrollment is limited to ensure small class sizes and personalized support.

Why Choose K5?

K5 offers a more personalized pace and environment for younger learners. Key benefits include:

  • Hands-on Learning: Children participate in engaging, project-based activities including STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math).
Focused Skill Building: Emphasis is placed on oral language, early literacy, number sense, and social development.
  • Boosted Confidence: Students gain foundational skills and confidence in a setting designed to support their developmental stage.
  • Qualified Teachers: The program is led by experienced, licensed educators.
  • Full School Schedule: Students follow a regular school-day routine, including lunch, recess, and participation in specials like Art, Music, Gym, and Library.

What’s the Difference Between K5 and Kindergarten?

While both K5 and Kindergarten follow Indiana State Standards and a research-based curriculum, the K5 curriculum is intentionally paced slower. It introduces foundational concepts through play and interaction rather than rigorous academics. For instance:

Frequently Asked Questions

Will My Child Go Straight to First Grade After K5?

No — K5 is intended as a transitional year, and children generally enter kindergarten the following year. However, if a child demonstrates exceptional readiness across all domains, families may request a readiness meeting to determine if early promotion is appropriate.

Is K5 Available for Children with an IEP or Identified Needs?

Yes. The K5 classroom is inclusive and designed to support diverse learners, including those with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or students receiving interventions.

Is Transportation Provided?

Yes. Students enrolled in K5 follow the same transportation guidelines as all Washington Primary students and are eligible for bus services.

Can My Child Stay in the Same Classroom for Kindergarten?

We currently have one dedicated K5 teacher, and the plan is for her to remain the K5 teacher the following year. With that said, students who complete the K5 program will transition into a regular kindergarten classroom the following school year. Placement decisions are made with consideration of each child’s needs, class dynamics, and collaboration between teachers and administration.
